Developing a Non-Profit Site: Step Four

I am a little late getting this out. Part of the problem with me writing on the topic of registering a URL is that I have only registered a URL only once. So I am not exactly what you would call an expert, so I have been hesitant on this one.

However, with that said, I will share what I know. As I stated in earlier posts, it is better if you register your url on your own. The reason being that if you don’t like your service provider you can take your url with you. GoDaddy is one of the more popular services that will allow you to register your url.

I personally, went through 1and1 and registered my url through them. As long as I am with the 1and1 I they wave the yearly fee for registering my url. I also noticed quite a few other providers with the same deal. I have been using 1and1 for other websites and have had good luck with them.

The key thing to remember with url registration is that you have to re-register your url yearly.

Another thing a lot of companies are doing is trying to get you to purchase urls with a different dot ending (.com, .tv, .net, etc…). The reason is obviously they make money doing this. However, it also is a service that helps you protect your url from others who might want to ride on your coat tails.

For example, if this website took off because I offer indispensable advice and post regularly, someone might register the url www.catholictechnogeek.net. This way when someone is googling catholictechnogeek, their sight might appear higher in the search and people will visit them instead of my sight.
